Dr. Diego Patiño

Inpatient Intern of the Month
Dr. Diego Patiño

Diego was a fabulous intern in the MICU. I have to applaud him for handling 3-4 overnight admissions among the 7 we got overnight. We barely had a minute between admissions yet he took each admission without complaint, while still cross-covering the old patients without prompting. That many admissions on a firm call day is rough, but add MICU acuity and it can feel extremely daunting, but Diego really stepped up and surpassed all expectations! He definitely deserves to be recognized!

Gabby Rodriguez

Inpatient Intern of the Month
Dr. Gabby Rodriguez

Gabby truly shined during her time on Med 2 Firm. She took the time to connect with her patients, anticipating their needs both in the hospital and beyond. Her medical knowledge far exceeds her current level of training.

Gabby regularly exudes a calm confidence, diligence, and commitment to her patients. She does an excellent job when staffing in the COH and going the extra mile.

Dr. Azim Merchant

Inpatient Resident of the Month
Dr. Azim Merchant

Azim deserves recognition for his unfailing commitment to patient-centered care. While covering a busy ACT team, he was called to bedside for a patient with critically dangerous hypoglycemia. The patient, still conscious, refused lifesaving sugar gel, dextrose, and glucagon, demanding that they be given a cheeseburger to eat instead and refusing all other interventions. While the rest of the team deliberated on how to address this, Azim kept the patient’s best interests at the forefront. Realizing this debate could not be settled in a time frame safe for the patient, he immediately took action, literally sprinting to the cafeteria and obtaining the patient a cheeseburger out of his own pocket. While this was a very unorthodox case, Azim’s dedication to patient outcomes above all and his quick decision-making averted what could have been a time-wasting argument with a critically ill patient. For his dedication to patient care and meeting patients where they are at, where many other care providers may not have, Azim deserves recognition!

I would like to nominate Azim Merchant for Resident of the Month in recognition of his quick thinking and compassionate response to a hypoglycemic patient in need. When a patient refused all other food, Azim immediately took the initiative to run to the cafeteria to get a cheeseburger, ensuring the patient received the nourishment they urgently needed. His dedication to patient care and his willingness to go above and beyond in a critical moment exemplify the qualities of an outstanding resident. Azim’s actions truly made a difference.

Inpatient Resident of the Month
Dr. Charlotte Starling

Charlotte did a commendable job caring for an incredibly sick patient on her very first few days as a senior. She had one of the sickest patients on the medicine floors, suffering from progressive multiorgan failure and requiring frequent interventions, but no ICU beds were available. On one non-call day the patient continued to worsen with increasingly poor mental status. Charlotte stayed well past expected hours, diligently following labs, communicating with specialists, updating family, and pursuing an ICU bed. Despite significant barriers to ICU transfer, Charlotte persisted in advocating for her patient. Despite multiple offers to assume care so that she could leave, Charlotte continued to provide care until she was able to finally secure the patient an ICU bed well after the time she was able to leave.

Charlotte deserves recognition for her medical excellence in stabilizing the ICU-level floor patient on one of her first few days as a senior, and even moreso for her ownership and work ethic in caring for them. This patient would have been a complex case for even a seasoned attending, but the fact that Charlotte provided such excellent care so early in her PGY2 year is remarkable. She went above and beyond, not taking no for an answer, in making sure the patient received the care they deserved. The patient and their family were very lucky to have Dr. Starling!

Kudos

Dr. Jason Zhang
“Shout out to Dr. Zhang for coming to assess [a sick patient] twice during the night. Dr. Zhang was very receptive to nursing input while being respectful and professional. Thank you!” – Annika Vasser, nurse on 14400
Dr. Arwa Mohammad
Arwa Mohammad
Dr. Mohammad was pulled for me on a couple days in the MICU and provided outstanding patient care during her days on the service. She went above and beyond in her role, including immediately building such strong rapport that she was able to lead goals of care discussions with patients and families. Given our enormous documentation burden as residents, we often deprioritize its importance; however, when transferring care across team members, accurate, concise, and timely documentation is really important – and she models this. I had a complete understanding of what happened with my patients and of the clinical picture of the patients she admitted. Our patients and I benefited from her service on our team!

Congratulations to all our amazing residents, and thank you for the work that you do!
