Dr. Erin Dyer joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine as an Instructor in August 2024. She grew up in Oxford, Mississippi and attended college at the University of Mississippi, where she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese in 2015. She was a member of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and the Chinese Language Flagship Program and spent three summers studying abroad in China. She developed an interest in teaching and mentoring, working as both a teaching assistant and private tutor throughout college, and continued to pursue her love of teaching throughout medical school and residency. She attended medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, where she was inducted into both Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honors Society. While in medical school, Dr. Dyer spent many Saturdays volunteering at the Jackson Free Clinic for uninsured patients in the Jackson metro area. She graduated from medical school cum laude in 2020. She completed her Internal Medicine internship and residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
During residency, she was chosen to be a member of the Washington University Teaching Physicians Pathway, which gave her numerous opportunities to further improve her teaching skills. She created a series of educational online modules on the interpretation of urinalysis, synovial fluid studies, and liver function tests and additional modules on diagnosis and treatment of small vessel vasculitis. She received funding from the Mentors in Medicine program to conduct research on the association between burnout and perception of gender stereotypes among Internal Medicine residents and presented this research at the Society for General Internal Medicine national meeting. After completing residency in 2023, she was awarded by the Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital with the Knowlton Incentive for Excellence Award for exemplifying a compassionate spirit combined with outstanding knowledge and skill.
After residency, Dr. Dyer served as the Ambulatory Chief Resident for the Internal Medicine Residency Program for the year 2023-2024, during which she had a key role in managing all administrative aspects of the Primary Care Medicine Clinic at the Center for Outpatient Health. Her clinical responsibilities included attending in the primary care clinic and on the inpatient Medicine and Cardiology Firm services. Her areas of interest include graduate medical education, transitions between inpatient and outpatient care, and caring for medically complex patients, with an emphasis on coordinating care between subspecialists. In addition to her clinical responsibilities with the Division of Hospital Medicine, she also spends part of her time as an attending in the Primary Care Medicine Clinic. Outside of the hospital, she enjoys doing yoga, exploring the many restaurants and breweries of St. Louis, and spending time with her husband and their very spoiled cat, Gabi.
