Dr. Benjamin Louis Hoemann joined the Division of Hospital Medicine in the Department of Medicine as an Instructor in Medicine in June of 2023. He was born in St. Louis, MO and raised in Washington, MO. He graduated from Valparaiso University in Indiana in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. He also completed a separate curriculum in the humanities as a Christ College Scholar, the honors college of Valparaiso University. He received his medical degree in 2020 from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. During medical school, he participated in heart transplantation research and took a special interest in studying medical Spanish, which culminated in a one-month foreign study in the Dominican Republic in February 2020.
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was eager to return home to St. Louis to continue his medical training. Dr. Hoemann completed his internship and residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis prior to joining the Division of Hospital Medicine. During his residency, he studied outcomes of ICU patients with cirrhosis who developed kidney failure and began extra-curricular training in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). His academic interests include critical care medicine, POCUS, and addiction medicine. He enjoys teaching and working with both medical students and residents. In his free time, he enjoys cycling, repairing bicycles, wood working, restoring antiques, and playing the piano/organ. He looks forward to providing care for his patients as a member of the Division of Hospital Medicine. His key interests are hospital medicine, critical care medicine, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and addiction medicine.
