With Left Bank Books, the Department of Medicine sponsored an evening with Ibram X. Kendi, PhD as he discussed his new book, How to Raise an Antiracist, a follow-up to his international best seller, How to Be an Antiracist. Held at The Grandel Theatre on June 21st, Kendi talked about How to Raise an Antiracist and how every parent, caregiver, and teacher can use it to raise the next generation of antiracist thinkers. Kendi followed with a conversation with Professor Kira Banks, PhD, the co-founder of the Institute for Healing Justice and Equity at Saint Louis University. Kendi and Banks were also joined by St. Louis artist Cbabi Bayoc, the illustrator of Goodnight Racism, Kendi’s other new release.
We were happy to sponsor this event with Left Bank Books because it’s important for us to go beyond the walls of the department and take a more active role in supporting community efforts that promote social and racial justice.

“We were happy to sponsor this event with Left Bank Books because it’s important for us to go beyond the walls of the department and take a more active role in supporting community efforts that promote social and racial justice,” reflects Angela Brown, MD, Professor of Medicine and Department of Medicine Vice Chair for Equity. “Dr. Kendi is a scholar who gives us the language and tools to understand what being anti-racist means and to then share these approaches with our loved ones, colleagues, and neighbors.”
Copies of Kendi’s How to Raise an Anti-Racist are available through the department’s Office of Inclusion and Diversity. Contact Jen Mosher mosherj@wustl.edu if interested.
Thank you to all from the Department of Medicine that attended.
