Vice Chair of Education

An update from the Office of the Vice Chair of Education

Summer has come to an end, which means the UME and GME worlds have both entered full-swing into recruitment season!

During this busy and stressful time of year, we would like to acknowledge the incredible amount of effort that our WashU community pours into ensuring the best outcomes for our medical students and GME programs. Without your grit and dedication, we would never be able to recruit such a talented pool of residents and fellows. It’s also an exciting time of onboarding many of our prior trainees into new educator faculty roles in the DOM!

Of course, though recruitment is front and center for most, everything else in the Med Ed world continues to tick. Our new interns and fellows are a quarter of the way through their first year, and hopefully settling in well to the WashU community. Our educators continue to guide and advise trainees in their clinical and research formation. Program administrators are managing recruitment logistics while simultaneously laying the ground work for winter events and semi-annual evaluations.

Medicine is a world that never stops moving, but we hope everyone is able to take a moment to reflect on the big picture and what incredible feats our education teams pull off each year. Please read below to hear about some of the great work that has taken place or is coming up on the horizon!

DOM Office of Education Annual Report

2022-2023 Annual Report - DOM Vice Chair for Education-newpost

Our office has been working hard to provide resources and support to our medicine educators and learners! Please see our Annual Report for a comprehensive update on our accomplishments, ongoing projects, and future goals.

Fellows’ Council

The DOM Fellows’ Council is off to a great start in the new academic year! The council hosted a session on Transitioning to a Consultant as part of the department’s inaugural New Fellow Orientation in July. We also hosted our 2nd annual and highly successful seminar on Job Negotiation for Fellows in September including excellent talks again from Drs. Fraser and Humphreys. Partnering this year with FWIM fellows, our attendees learned about the various aspects of selecting and securing a first job, as well as practical tips for reviewing contracts.

Coming up, our DOM Fellows Council will be hosting a Fall Fun social event for all DOM fellows at Eckert’s Fun Farm on Saturday, October 28th! Fellows and their families are invited to join Council for an evening full of rides and games, and to enjoy a bonfire while meeting colleagues from across the department. Please email domfellowscouncil@gowustl.onmicrosoft.com for additional information.

Fellowship Applicant Open House

Planning is underway for a Department of Medicine Open House for DOM fellowship applicants. The event will be held Monday, November 6, and will give fellowship applicants an opportunity to visit campus and St. Louis separate from their program interviews. Participating applicants will hear from DOM and institutional leaders about the many resources and training opportunities available at WashU, gain perspective from fellows and their families about life in St. Louis, and take a trolley tour of the areas surrounding campus. We look forward to hosting this event and showcasing all of the wonderful things about training at Wash U!

Medical Student Assessment

The Medicine Clerkship Competency Committee (CCC) is seeking volunteers who hold a faculty appointment within the WUSM Department of Medicine. The CCC meets after each clerkship block to review students’ assessment data and summarize students’ performance in written narratives. Members comment that the work is fun, enhances their skills in assessment, and prepares them for future medical education leadership roles. Contact Lisa Zickuhr, MD, MHPE (zickuhrl@wustl.edu) if you’d like to volunteer.

Loeb Teaching Fellowship

Applications are currently open for the Carol B. and Jerome T. Loeb Teaching Fellows program. The Loeb Fellowship aims to advance clinical education at WashU by honoring faculty committed to clinical excellence and education, and encouraging teaching that excellence to medical students, residents and fellows. Loeb teaching fellows are awarded $50,000 per year for two years in salary support. Additional information can be found on the Academy of Educators website. The application deadline is Friday, October 13, 2023.

Academy of Educators Small Grants Program

The Academy of Educators and the Medical Education Research Unit (MERU) of the Washington University School of Medicine accept proposals for grant funding for education research and scholarship projects. Projects must be focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning, rather than biomedical discovery or application. Grants of up to $5000 will be awarded based on a competitive review process. Please visit the Academy of Educators website for additional details and to apply. Applications must be submitted by Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
