July Inpatient Resident of the Month

“Firm can be stressful. Firm with a full structural overhaul also stressful. Firm with a second structural overhaul while being the team that lost and gained an entire new list overnight TWICE is just ridiculous.

This person did it all with unmatched poise and integrity. And did it for TWO months straight. Not once did she let the burden of these changes impact patient care or dictate the way she worked. She gave the same attention, commitment, and diligence to every patient: from day one to day 60. She still found time to help her teammates. To stay late to put in lines and foleys. To teach medical students. To help interns.”

“She consistently maintained impressive patience, compassion, and good humor. A wonderful coworker, teacher, and role model.”

“Major factor in the success and safety of firm (both night float and day) this month. Not only did she take it upon herself to identify and address the kinks in the system, but she also gave one-on-one orientation to new interns and residents as they came on. I am certain that without her initiative, there would have been more logistical and potentially safety issues.
…big team player on night float, shouldering the responsibility of multiple ACT’s on a very busy night when she wasn’t even responsible for ACT/Code coverage. Overall excellent leadership and commitment to patient care.”

“Beyond helpful to all her peers during the geolocalization transition.”

“Outstanding resident on Firm Medicine. Excellent patient care, supervision of the interns. “

July Inpatient Intern of the Month
Harrison Lancaster

“He started intern year with 3 weeks of MICU Nights. From our very first night together, he impressed me with his eagerness to learn – he was not only curious about how to logistically be an efficient and competent new intern, but also about the thought processes of his residents, fellows, and attendings. He incorporated feedback well and asked great questions. He has a good knowledge base, did well at self-directed learning on the fly, and even got some really specific Dr. Brody questions right! He was always willing to help the team and stepped up when needed. He handled some stressful nights and always maintained a positive attitude.“

Anderson

July Outpatient Resident of the Month
Bjorn Anderson

“We saw a patient in clinic together and I think he went above and beyond to care for them. The patient presented for routine follow up but after further history he determined that the patient was in a mental health crisis. Bjorn spoke with the patient’s mother to gather more collateral and when the patient became upset regarding need for ED transfer, he was able to calmly redirect him on multiple occasions while we awaited security and EMS to ensure a safe transfer. He spoke directly with the ED Psych resident to give handoff and wrote a very thorough note which expedited the patient’s admission for further treatment.”

Wang

July Outpatient Intern of the Month
Qianli Wang

“He is incredibly hardworking and has demonstrated amazing commitment to his patients. He is always seeing 3-4 patients per half block. He stays late to finish his notes and serves as an inspiration for my own work ethic. He is incredibly kind and always willing to answer questions, no matter how trivial. He takes care of his fellow interns. He is a great teammate and incredibly kind to everyone. He takes on challenges with poise and professionalism.”

Resident Kudos
David Lambert

David Lambert
His excellent care of a non-English speaking non-established walk-in patient in the PCMC with a fractured jaw. Patient was a walk-in IOV with a language barrier and he agreed to take the patient onto his schedule knowing it was going to be complex to take care of and time consuming. Patient left having his needs met and an understanding of next steps. Nursing notified us of Dr. Lambert’s going above and beyond to care for this new patient.

Resident Kudos
Koral Shah

Koral Shah
Among the many qualities Dr. Shah demonstrated while serving our patients on the hospitalist team, I wanted to highlight how she exemplified two necessary, though often forgotten, aspects of our role as the “primary team” for complex hospitalized patients. For the first patient, through persistence, she managed to arrange a timely outpatient follow up, which then enabled us to discharge the patient earlier. For the second patient, she led and coordinated a complex discussion between 4 consulting services (medonc, biliary, ultrasound rad, and IR) to arrange for an essential but high risk biopsy; thanks to this discussion, the plan we initially had in place was improved, and we also had a back up plan in place.

Intern Kudos
Daniel Hwang

Daniel Hwang
I worked with Daniel for 3 weeks on Cardiology firm and watched as he navigated complex patients and social issues with professionalism, patience and kindness. Daniel is a stellar intern. He pre-rounds faster than anyone I have ever seen and is prepared with a full-fledged plan for rounds. His cardiology and general medicine knowledge is exemplary and this was demonstrated on a daily basis. He is also an excellent patient advocate; he quickly identified our patient’s largest barrier for treatment/discharge and routinely reminded the team of the patient’s perspective. This helped re-focus the team’s care on the patient’s unique issues. Lastly, Daniel was always a helpful and ready team player.

She did a phenomenal job during her first month as an intern on the inpatient service. She cared for some very complex patients both medically and socially. She handled one particular case for over two weeks with a level of maturity that is far beyond her level of experience. Throughout, she was always positive, laughing and was a great team player.

Resident Kudos
Millie Horn

Millie Horn
I would like to recognize Millie for all her hard work in making my transition into the MICU/residency as smooth as possible. Millie constantly supported me throughout the month, but also pushed/challenged me as appropriate for my level of capacity as I grew and improved throughout the rotation. Millie worked constantly to make sure our patients were well taken care of and to make sure that we were improving and learning at all times. I really enjoyed my MICU experience because of her!

Resident Kudos
Elissa Arnold

Elissa Arnold
Dr. Arnold was a fantastic senior resident to start residency with. She was very patient with new interns, and made sure we felt comfortable with every aspect of clinical care in the fast paced environment of the MICU. She made it a point that we got educational benefit out of every clinical encounter, and ensured the working environment was professional, but fun and friendly. She also is a great fund of critical care knowledge and acted as a great resource to other senior level residents, not only the interns. Very deserving of resident of the month!

Resident Kudos
Shelley Burge

Shelley Burge
Shelley has a symptomatic clinic patient undergoing evaluation for positive TSPOT requiring home isolation and multiple diagnostic tests. Dr. Burge has been exemplary in her follow up, communication between multiple teams, and ensuring the patient has the indicated evaluation for what has so far been a surprisingly diagnostic dilemma. She was out of the office for a few days and very proactively developed a plan with anticipatory guidance and coverage to ensure no lapse in care!

Resident Kudos
Andrew Alter

Andrew Alter
Really enjoyed working with Andrew this last month. He provides excellent patient care while being thorough and efficient. He helps other residents/interns during busy clinic days, and I specially saw him go out of his way to help a new intern order complex DME. Always willing to see extra patients and is extremely dependable.

Resident Kudos
Shivani Mattay

Shivani Mattay
Shivani did great work in the MICU. I saw her nail difficult arterial and venous cannulations in an extremely edematous patient. Selflessly helped with patients that were not her own. She’s already a stellar senior and leader.
