Dr. Mark Sundermeyer joins the Department of Medicine

Mark Sundermeyer, MD

Dr. Mark Sundermeyer joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Oncology as an Associate Professor as of February 2024.  He is a board-certified hematologist and medical oncologist with experience in clinical care, research accrual, teaching/education, and administration.  He was admitted to the University Missouri Columbia as an 8-year undergraduate/medical school Conley Scholar. Following medical school, he completed his internal medicine internship and residency at Temple University Philadelphia.  Subsequently joined the hematology and oncology fellowship program at Fox Chase Cancer Center where he focused his research in the Gastrointestinal division.  During this research he received the ASCO Merit award to attend and present his research.  

Since that time, he has had publications in the fields of gastrointestinal, breast, hematologic and lung cancer.  Following fellowship, he joined Abington Memorial Hospital in 2006 which ultimately became a part of Jefferson University Hospital system.  During his 14 years there he served as interim division chief and subsequently as deputy chief of the division.  He served during that tenure on multiple management committees and organizations including the integration with Jefferson Hospital and the development, planning and implementation of the Asplundh Cancer Pavilion.  An active participant in resident and fellow education, he had recurrent teaching presentations at resident education events and grand rounds as well as clinic mentorship.  In 2020 he joined Oregon Health and Science University acting as medical director for their satellite facility in partnership with Columbia Memorial Hospital.  

During this time, he also served as the cancer liaison physician with initial certification from the COC in 2020 and recertification in 2023.  He received COC Cancer liaison physician National outstanding award recognition in 2023.  After relocating to Missouri to be closer to family he has joined Washington University Physicians and the Siteman Cancer Center as a full-time clinician.  Currently, he has outpatient clinics focused on gastrointestinal, genitourinary and breast malignancy with commitments to trial accrual and education.  His key interests have focused on clinical and administrative expertise in the field of oncology and hematology.
