Siyan “Stewart” Cao, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, WashU Medicine Division of Gastroenterology, recently was awarded the The American Society of Clinical Investigation 2026 Young Physician-Scientist Award. The American Society for Clinical Investigation seeks to support the scientific efforts, educational needs, and clinical aspirations of physician-scientists to improve the health of all people.

The ASCI Council Young Physician-Scientist Awards (YPSAs) recognize physician-scientists who are early in their first faculty appointment and have made notable achievements in their research.

Dr. Cao focuses on the mucosal immunity, biomarker discovery, and novel therapies for inflammatory bowel disease, with a goal to advance personalized management of IBD. His research interests also include hepatobiliary disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, and colon cancer. 

Dr. Cao is on the CCF National Scientific Advisory Committee, the AGA Research Awards Panel, and the International Congress of Mucosal Immunology Scientific Advisory Committee. He chaired the Digestive Disease Week (DDW) Abstract Review Group. He also serves as an Associate Editor for Inflammation and is on the Editorial Board of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.
