AWAM Leaders in Empowerment and Development (LEAD) Awards

Description

The AWAM LEAD awards was announced at the 2nd Annual DOM Women in Medicine and Science Seminar, (which was held on Friday April 28th, 2023). Nominations for the LEAD Awards will be accepted until June 9, 2023. Awards will be announced in late June. The awards are open to all DOM faculty and will be awarded according to faculty level (i.e. one award will be given to a faculty at the Instructor/Assistant Professor level and another to a faculty at the Associate Professor/Professor level).

Nominees should be DOM faculty members who have demonstrated transformational leadership qualities as a sponsor, mentor, or collaborator, or who have challenged, motivated, or inspired others to advance their career. Letters of nomination should be from women or those who identify as women faculty members who have received the benefit of the nominee’s support and should include specific details of how the nominee supported the career development and advancement of women at all levels at WashU. Letters of nomination should also be accompanied by one (for instructor/assistant level) or two (for associate level and above) letters of support. Support letters may come from DOM faculty, trainees or staff who have significantly benefited from interaction with the nominees.

The awards are intended to include all aspects of advancing women’s career development (examples include a faculty member who has been a sponsor, mentor, advocate, or formative example (i.e. by their example has challenged, motivated, or inspired the nominating woman to advance their own career)). The primary nomination should come from a DOM faculty member or DOM trainee (self-nominations are not allowed). Supporting letters may be from DOM faculty members, trainees or staff.

Criteria for selection

  • Nomination letter (submitted by DOM faculty member or DOM trainee, no self-nominations allowed) of a DOM faculty member who has been a sponsor, mentor, advocate or formative example as determined by the nominating person.
  • Supporting letter(s) submitted by faculty member, trainee, or staff (1 supporting letter for instructor/assistant professor level; 2 supporting letters for associate professor/professor level) within the DOM.
  • One or more of the following (priority given for those who contribute to career development in multiple ways):
    • Sponsorship in:
      • Attaining new positions on committees or leadership positions.
      • Connecting with other clinicians or investigators to provide new opportunities and visibility.
      • Nominating for recognition awards.
    • Mentorship.
    • Collaboration that was instrumental in helping the faculty member obtain publications and/or research grants.
    • Level Specific Criteria:
      • Associate professor/professor level:
        • Helped the faculty member get promoted.
        • Helped the faculty member get national speaking engagement.
      • Instructor/Assistant professor level:
        • Encouraged the faculty member to apply for leadership position
        • Motivated/inspired the faculty member by.
      • Time spent supporting the faculty member.
      • Priority given to women and URiM faculty nominees.
