Announcement of next Medical Director, Lung Transplant Program

We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Chad Witt has accepted the position of Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program at Washington University in St. Louis, succeeding Dr. Ramsey Hachem starting April 1, 2024.

Dr. Chad Witt received his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern and completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Chad is foremost an outstanding clinician. His superb skills and clinical acumen in caring for patients with end-stage lung disease before and after lung transplantation has garnered national reputation. Chad’s administrative skills and commitment to training and educating the next generation of pulmonary and critical care medicine physicians are evident by his leadership role as Program Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship. With a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and patient care, both programs have grown in number and flourished under his leadership. Chad exemplifies the consummate clinician-educator and became the first 3-time winner of the Robert M. Senior MD Award voted on by the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellows annually, “In recognition of excellence and dedication as a teacher, clinician, scientist, and mentor of the Fellowship Program in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine.” A gifted clinician, teacher, and administrator, we are thrilled that he will take on this important leadership role. 


Dr. Ramsey Hachem is Professor of Medicine and is the current Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program since 2013. Ramsey will step down as Medical Director in April, 2024 to take on an exciting opportunity as the next Chief, Division of Pulmonary Medicine at University of Utah. Dr. Hachem has developed a body of work studying clinical outcomes in lung transplantation and his contributions has changed practice in the field. During his tenure, our program has become one of the preeminent centers in terms of volume and outcomes. The institution celebrated its 2000th lung transplant in early 2023. This is a testament to Ramsey’s long-standing commitment to patient care, and collaborative leadership with the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Section of Lung Transplantation at Washington University in St. Louis and Transplant Services at Barnes Jewish Hospital. We wish Ramsey well on his new opportunity and are grateful for his years of service and contributions to our institution.
