Vice Chair for the Advancement of Women’s Careers

An update from the Vice Chair for the Advancement of Women’s Careers

The new year brings continued enthusiasm! I’m excited to share updates on the work we’ve been doing.

The Executive Committee, which has faculty representatives from almost every division and all ranks & tracts, has been hard at work strategizing for the upcoming year.

The Programming Subcommittee, led by Dr. Leslie Gewin, has put together a wonderful line-up of speakers for the 3rd annual Department of Medicine Women in Medicine & Science Seminar scheduled for April 11, 2024. The event is open to all!

Recognizing the importance of celebrating faculty members who champion the advancement of women, we are currently in the process of accepting nominations for the AWAM Leaders in Empowerment and Development (LEAD) award. Please consider nominating faculty members who have served as a sponsors, mentors, collaborators, or motivators. Nominations are open until February 16, 2024. The award recipients will be announced after the Award subcommittee reviews the nominations.

In an effort to ensure transparency and equity in our conference nominations, we have introduced a new process to solicit nominations for the AAMC Women Faculty Development Seminars. Nominations were obtained from division chiefs in addition to encouraging self-nominations. This inclusive strategy aims to broaden the pool, providing everyone with the opportunity to step forward

As we lay the foundation for the future, the Executive Committee is diligently working on drafting a strategic plan. This plan will identify priorities aligned with the mission and vision of our department and institution.

FWIM will remain in good hands under Dr. Namrata Patel, who is stepping into the role as director. She will continue to provide programming to help support the professional development of women trainees and oversee the many initiatives currently in place such as the DOM Moms & Caregivers initiative and the FWIM Trainee Leadership Development Program.
