Dr. Ellie Fishbein joins the Department of Medicine

Ellie Fishbein, MD

Dr. Ellie Fishbein joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of General Medicine and Geriatrics as an assistant professor in July 2024.  With fellowship training in the field, she also plays a key role in medical education, teaching and mentoring residents and medical students in clinical settings, particularly in the care of older adults.  Through her Quality Improvement Project, and role as junior inpatient attending, Dr. Fishbein is knowledgeable in managing the transition of care from hospital to home or other facilities, ensuring a smooth process centered around patient needs.  She also contributes to the University of Iowa Family Medicine Department through lecturing on topics such as medical history, public perception of medicine, and dementia.

 At the Carver College of Medicine, she is involved in facilitating small group sessions within the Medicine and Society curriculum.  She is committed to advancing healthcare education and preparing medical students, residents, and fellows for careers in geriatric care.  Her key interests include providing primary care for older adults, focusing on assessing safety and helping older adults maintain independence, engaging in advanced care planning, addressing cognitive impairment, and assessing and treating mood disorders.
