Dr. Lolwa Al-Obaid joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology as an Assistant Professor in July 2024. She is a transplant hepatologist, who attended medical school at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She completed her internal medicine residency at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts, where she also served as a chief internal medicine resident, before moving to St. Louis to complete her gastroenterology and transplant hepatology training at Washington University in St. Louis. She has a clinical interest in patients with Fontan Associated Liver Disease, which is a late stage complication of the surgical interventions required to repair certain congenital heart diseases. Additionally, her interests extends to women’s health and liver disease, providing attentive support to women navigating liver-related issues throughout various stages, including preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum periods.
Drawing from a rich background as a former chief internal medicine resident, Dr. Al-Obaid excels in teaching, curriculum development. She enjoys working with house staff and medical students to provide them with a comprehensive experience during their rotations on the hepatology consult service. Her experiences have shaped her commitment to fostering medical education and advancing healthcare initiatives. In 2018, she travelled to Amman, Jordan, on a medical mission with the Syrian American Medical Society to provide medical care to Syrian refugees. Her experience during that time piqued her interest in global health. She hopes to continue to advocate for and volunteer with similar organizations. Beyond the realm of medicine, Dr. Al-Obaid finds joy in family adventures, traveling to new destinations with her husband and children. In moments of relaxation, she enjoys cooking and playing tennis.
