John K. Wallace, Jr. and Ellen A. Wallace Distinguished Professor and Professor of Organizational Behavior, Olin Business School
Negotiation is the process of reaching a mutual decision over how to allocate scarce resources. Given this broad definition, we are negotiating constantly—whether over big-ticket items such as salary or large purchases or daily items such as how we use our time. Women face particular challenges in negotiation, based on differences in approaches to the task and to relationships with other parties, as well as differences in how they are perceived by the other side. This session will be interactive, with an experiential exercise as well as a lecture on basic frameworks of negotiation analysis at a general level and gender differences in particular.
