I am pleased to announce that Carolina Salvador, MD, has been appointed as the Director of Wellness for the Department of Medicine. Dr. Salvador was born in Spain and came to the U.S. to do research at the University of Texas, Southwestern. She then received her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). She did internal medicine residency and a geriatrics research fellowship at UTHSCSA, followed by a fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Louisville. Dr. Salvador was on the faculty at the University of Louisville before joining the Medical Oncology and Hematology Division at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 2012. At UAB, she was the founding director of the Integrative Medicine Program, after completing additional fellowship training in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona at Tucson. She is also trained as a medical acupuncturist. During her tenure at UAB, she was a member of the Wellness Committee as well as the designated wellness director of the hematology/oncology fellowship.
Dr. Salvador is committed to creating an inclusive and adaptable program of wellness for everyone in the DOM. She brings all her expertise in integrative medicine modalities that have been shown to help increase resilience, improve relationships, decrease fatigue and reduce burnout, and may even offer some new solutions to old problems. Dr. Salvador will be working with Dr. Angela Brown, Vice Chair of Health Equity and Dr. Milan Anadkat, Director of the Office of Faculty Development to advance wellness programs for faculty, trainees and staff in the Department.
