I am pleased to announce that Dr. Sanjay Jain has been named the Mabel Dorn Reeder Distinguished Professor in the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Jain earned a Bachelor of Arts in Genetics from the University of California, Berkeley, and combined MD and PhD degrees from Northwestern University School of Medicine. Following residency training in Anatomic Pathology and postdoctoral research at WashU Medicine, he joined the faculty in 2006. He is currently Professor of Medicine, Pathology and Immunology, and Pediatrics, and has served as Director of the Kidney Translational Research Center since 2012.
Over nearly two decades at WashU Medicine, Dr. Jain has become a leading national kidney researcher advancing our understanding of 2D and 3D organization of the human kidney across the life span. Using advanced tools like single-cell genomics, spatial biology, and molecular profiling, he created comprehensive cellular maps of healthy and diseased human kidneys. His work defined how kidneys repair after injury and revealed their three-dimensional neurovascular architecture, discovering “mother glomeruli” as central hubs of neural connectivity to harmonize the activity of a million filtering units. He has been one of the most highly funded investigators by the NIH at WashU for several years. Dr. Jain leads major initiatives like Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP), HuBMAP, and Pediatric Center of Excellence in Nephrology (PCEN), positioning WashU Medicine as a premier center for kidney precision medicine.
Dr. Jain is also a dedicated mentor, educator, and institutional leader. He has trained students, fellows, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty who have gone on to successful academic careers. Through his leadership of the Kidney Translational Research Center and national research consortia, he has strengthened opportunities for trainees and fostered a collaborative culture that advances both science and patient care. Dr. Jain is widely respected for his intellectual generosity, collaborative spirit, and unwavering commitment to WashU. His innovative research, scientific leadership, and dedication to mentorship have had a profound impact on the field of nephrology and WashU.
The Mabel Dorn Reeder Distinguished Professorship recognizes Dr. Jain’s extraordinary contributions to research, education, and service while supporting his continued leadership in advancing kidney science and precision medicine.
