Leadership Announcement – Cardiology/Medicine Firm Medical Director

I am pleased to announce that Justin Sadhu, MD, MPHS, FACC, Professor of Medicine, in the Cardiovascular Division, has been appointed as the Cardiology/Medicine Firm Medical Director.

Justin S. Sadhu, MD, MPHS, FACC, Professor of Medicine in the Cardiovascular Division, joined the Department of Medicine in 2015. Dr. Sadhu completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois in Chicago, where he graduated with Highest Distinction in Biochemistry; Mathematics and Computer Science minor. He attended medical school at Washington University School of Medicine as a Distinguished Student Scholar, graduating in 2007 as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Sadhu completed internal medicine residency, cardiology fellowship, and a Master degree in Population Health Sciences at WashU/BJH.

Dr. Sadhu’s clinical practice is in general cardiology with strong interests in medical education and patient safety/quality improvement. He has been engaged with undergraduate medical education as a course director, through launch of the Gateway MD Curriculum, as Chair of the Phase 1 Operations Committee, and on the Committee on the Oversight of Medical Student Education. Dr. Sadhu has been recognized with multiple teaching awards. Dr. Sadhu is also engaged in cardiology education nationally, serving as Chair of the American College of Cardiology In-Training Examination Committee and for over 10 years on ACC committees developing formative assessments in support of cardiologists’ self-assessment and maintenance of certification.

Dr. Sadhu is the Cardiovascular Division Patient Safety Officer and a member of the DOM Clinical Quality, Safety, and Operations Executive Council and Heart & Vascular Growth Steering Committee. He is engaged with ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing lengths of stay on the cardiology inpatient service. Dr. Sadhu treasures the interdepartmental and interprofessional relationships built, education received, and his patient care experiences as a medical student, member of the house staff, and attending at WashU and looks forward to contributing to the next chapter of cardiology inpatient care and education at WashU/BJH. Dr. Sadhu will be playing an integral role as the Cardiology/Medicine Firm teams transition into the new Plaza West Tower in October 2025.

Dr. Sadhu will be joining our teaching service Medical Director team, alongside Dr. Margo Girardi (Medicine 1) and Dr. Zach Morgan (Medicine 2). These medical directors serve in dual roles to assist with Department of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital operations and patient safety, and quality for medicine inpatient units. The Teaching Service Medical Directors work closely with hospital, nursing, and Department of Medicine leadership to improve patient care delivery and patient experience, and they help optimize learner experience on the teaching services as core faculty members of the Internal Medicine Residency Program.

I would also like to extend my thanks and gratitude to Dr. Mustafa Husaini for his service as the inaugural Cards/Medicine Firm Medical Director. Dr. Husaini is transitioning to a role in the Northeast.  He did an outstanding job as the medical director and are grateful for his leadership.  We wish him well in his new role.
