Chriswell

Intern of the Month
Dr. Meagan Chriswell

“Meagan did an amazing job at the VA. During the first week, and first day soloing on 10 patients, Meagan navigated discharging 4 patients each with varying discharge challenges (all in CPRS, mind you). For example, one patient was leaving on a complex insulin regimen and she made sure that she got a CGM and had additional time to discuss with using insulin with the diabetic educator. All of the discharge instructions on all of the patients were so clear and well written for the patients and any providers to understand. All the while Meagan coordinated care on the other active patients, talking to numerous consultants and families. It would be a lot for any physician to do this amount of work in a day, yet Meagan handled it with an efficiency and confidence that was truly impressive.”

Huang

Intern of the Month
Dr. Maemae Huang

“Maemae was an excellent intern to have during a rough stretch of MICU nights. She showed great perseverance during our week together and was not deterred by the many challenges faced. She efficiently worked through multiple admissions each night, was proactive about updating family, and had well thought out plans for very complex patients. I really appreciated her attention to detail with combing through weeks of outside hospital records to find culture and antibiotic susceptibility data that was critical for the proper treatment of our patient. It was evident to everyone on the team that she cares very deeply for the wellbeing of her patients.”

Kamilah Scales

Resident of the Month
Dr. Kamilah Scales

“I am honored to nominate Kamilah for Intern of the Month for her outstanding performance during her month in the MICU. Since day 1, she demonstrated exceptional clinical acumen, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to patient care. Kamilah exhibited a remarkable ability to adapt to the fast-paced, high-acuity environment of the MICU. She quickly familiarized herself with critically ill patients, ensuring a thorough understanding of their complex pathophysiology. Her presentations were well-organized and demonstrated a depth of knowledge that exceeded expectations. She was always one of the first to arrive and the last to leave, ensuring that all tasks were completed meticulously. She followed up on critical labs, imaging, and consultant recommendations without needing reminders, demonstrating her strong sense of ownership.

Beyond clinical knowledge, she exemplified compassionate patient-centered care. She consistently took the time to communicate with patients and their families, even in emotionally challenging situations. She demonstrated empathy and professionalism when discussing prognosis and treatment plans, earning the trust and respect of both patients and staff. Her teamwork and collegiality were equally impressive. She was always eager to help co-interns and medical students (we had 2!!), creating a collaborative and supportive learning environment. She never hesitated to assist with admissions, procedures, or critical patient events, even when it was outside of her direct responsibilities. Her enthusiasm for learning was infectious, and her positive attitude helped maintain morale during demanding shifts.

Perhaps most impressively, she showed incredible growth and resilience throughout. She actively sought feedback and incorporated it, refining her clinical decision-making and procedural skills. By month’s end, she was managing ICU patients with increasing confidence, making thoughtful assessments, and had well-reasoned management plans with minimal supervision.

Crozier

Resident of the Month
Dr. Dena Crozier

“Dr. Crozier staffed a patient in clinic with me and did an outstanding job. The patient had multiple long-standing issues that required support, including oropharyngeal cancer s/p resection and RT which has been complicated by dysphagia. Dr. Crozier addressed these concerns clearly and compassionately and made appropriate referrals to assist with the complaint. She also tracked the patient’s interconnecting hypertension and hypothyroidism which have been very difficult to manage. She developed a careful and intelligent plan to manage these issues with appropriate follow-up.

Finally, when I went to leave the patient said, “Sir, I just want to say that she has been THE BEST DOCTOR I HAVE EVER HAD! I’ve had so many doctors and she’s simply the best. She thinks so carefully about EVERYTHING, she monitors every issue and always finds an answer–even if she needs help she goes to get it. She doesn’t leave anything unchecked.” He clearly felt warm and cared for by such thorough doctoring and was very grateful. We are lucky to have Dr. Crozier in our residency.”

Zhuang

Resident of the Month
Dr. Kathlyn Zhuang

Dr. Zhuang was an incredible senior to have. She managed some very challenging family interactions during our rotation together at the level of some of our best attendings. It’s clear her abilities are rooted in a passion for treating patients and families with respect. When she rotated off service, numerous families and patients spoke about badly missing her presence as someone who guided them through a tough time. As an intern, she offered so much encouragement and support when I likewise was having a hard time making it through a challenging year. Anyone who has a chance to work with her should count themselves lucky!

Congratulations to all our amazing residents, and thank you for the work that you do!
