Intern of the Month
Dr. Nicholas Griffith

“This physician managed to get a *same day* urgent transfer from the VA to BJH *on a weekend* which is a feat in and of itself. He was able to accurately recognize concern for new onset septic arthritis in a patient who was pending dispo, and communicating history and exam findings over the phone to a consultant that allowed us to accurately assess that the patient was unlikely to have acute gouty arthritis, unlikely to have tenosynovitis, and likely to have septic arthritis. Given that the appropriate surgical services were unavailable at the VA, he identified the appropriate next step for specialty assistance, appropriately held abx until diagnostic tap was performed urgently to maximize diagnostic yield, then equally appropriately initiated broad spectrum coverage including other possible organisms outside of the norm given risk factors. On encountering resistance to transfer to BJH, he appropriately engaged other services and even attempted direct ED transfer to best manage the patient. Dr. Griffith did all of this without his senior resident, who had the day off. Dr. Griffith displayed fantastic intuition and clinical acumen, and will provide exceptional care of his patients.”

Sharma

Intern of the Month
Dr. Pranav Sharma

“Dr. Sharma was an excellent intern, effectively functioning at the level of a senior already. He effectively handled multiple complicated OSH and ICU transfers on our call day while still providing compassionate care for his patients. He also independently developed patient plans that matched my (and the attending’s) thought process as well. Despite how busy his list was, he still found time to teach both of our medical students about the pathologies of his patients.”

Geyer

Intern of the Month
Dr. Alex Geyer

“While I was on a MICU/ED rotations, I noticed that Alex, who is on my Anchor team, had seen several of my patients in the COH for team visits. I was so impressed with the dedication and time he took with my patients which I could ascertain from his diligent documentation and follow-up. He messaged me regarding findings to note for follow-up visits and helped to coordinate an urgent Endocrine appointment for a patient. I was so thankful for his attentive care and communication. He clearly cares about our patients in the COH and is an excellent colleague.”

Scott Anderson

Resident of the Month
Dr. Scott Anderson

“From Med 1 Nurses shout-out: He was 4th Night Float this week.  He was great to work with all week long, but he was particularly supportive with a very difficult patient that needed to be discharged due to her behaviors. Not only did he remain professional, he was compassionate.

From Med 2 Nurses shout-out: We had a rowdy patient being agitated in the hallway (not one of Scott’s patients) and the nurse manager said he jumped right in to help get him back to his room and they were very thankful for it.

I wanted to share kudos about Dr. Dingle and Dr. Anderson who are currently on service. Their bedside manner and communication with the nursing staff has been exceptional. Both also have a very positive attitude and are very approachable to the staff. They truly go above and beyond, and nursing staff have nothing but positive accolades to give these two.

Arwa Mohammad

Resident of the Month
Dr. Arwa Mohammad

Exceptional Care – excerpt below sent from family member of a patient.

Even though you had an IOV added to your schedule late in the day and then they showed up late as well, you were still so kind and understanding. I cannot thank you enough for the time, empathy, compassion and kindness you shared with Ryan and Natalie. They felt seen, heard and finally like they would be able to get some answers. You were thoughtful, thorough and explained everything in great detail so that they could understand. Most importantly, you included them in the conversation and spent so much time getting to know Ryan’s history.

Ryan is the youngest of 4 children and Natalie is the middle of 7 children. They also have 3 children of their own and 4 parents between them. When I tell you that you brought immense peace to every one of us by the care Ryan received, I mean that deeply. Even though it was just Ryan and Natalie in that exam room with you, all of our hearts were there with them. We knew they needed someone who would fight until they had answers. And that’s what you did that day.

Since then, you’ve called them personally to go over lab results, talk with them about additional testing and gotten them scheduled with pulmonology next week. You reviewed the images of his CT Scan with a radiologist and noted there was scarring on his lungs, spleen and liver-all things that were not reported on the original CT Impression.

You have shown exceptional care, Dr. Mohammad, and I am so proud to know this is the kind of care our patients are receiving here in the PCMC. Thank you seems too little, but it’s what I have. May you continue to care for all of your patients with this same level of excellence, knowing that you are making a true difference in their lives.

David Zhang

Resident of the Month
Dr. David Zhang

I’d love to nominate David Zhang for Resident of the Month for his exceptional care, his sincerity, and inspiration.

Most recently he was on Med 2 and Swing admitter. On Firm, he led his team expertly to provide the best patient care. He proactively made sure that tasks got done and taught along the way. He leads with sincerity, and his desire to help anyone who needs it is felt by anyone who works with him.

While on Swing during a particular rough Firm admissions stretch, he readily and enthusiastically took on admissions to help ease the burden of his fellow residents on days and nights, staying late to do so at times.

His passion for medicine is inspirational and he deserves to be recognized for his intrepid efforts.

Congratulations to all our amazing residents, and thank you for the work that you do!
