Dr. Ugonna Nwankwo joined the Department of Medicine in the Cardiovascular Division as an Associate Professor in June 2025. He was previously Director of adult congenital heart disease at Saint Louis University and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s hospital. He earned his medical degree at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at UPMC, followed by a pediatric cardiology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He then completed a 4th-year advanced fellowship in congenital interventional cardiology at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University.
Dr. Nwankwo is quadruple board-certified in pediatrics, internal medicine, pediatric cardiology and adult congenital heart disease. He specializes in adult congenital heart disease, congenital interventional cardiology and pediatric cardiology. As an educator, Dr. Nwankwo is involved in training pediatric and adult cardiology fellows, pediatric residents and medical students. His research interests include adult congenital heart disease clinical outcomes, congenital pediatric-to-adult transition care, transcatheter management of adult congenital heart disease, transcatheter valve therapies, and novel device technology. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a fellow of the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention and is a member of the Adult Congenital Heart Association and Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.
