Dr. Timothy Ackerman joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine as an Instructor in July 2024. He was born and raised in East Brunswick, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University and graduated magna cum laude with departmental honors in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Cellular Biology and Neuroscience. He was also inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and was named a Henry Rutgers Scholar. Dr. Ackerman initially worked in the medical diagnostics industry, helping in the development and production of rapid in vitro diagnostic kits for the evaluation of infectious diseases and other health threats for use in low resource settings.
After a couple years working in industry, he decided to pursue a clinically focused career and enrolled in the study of medicine at St. George’s University, graduating in 2017. He completed his residency in combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2021. After completing residency, Dr. Ackerman joined the faculty at the Louisiana State University Health Shreveport School of Medicine as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Internal Medicine – Pediatrics. He quickly became involved in both resident and medical student education and was promoted to Assistant Professor.
Dr. Ackerman served as Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine – Pediatrics Residency Program, operating a head of the Clinical Competency Committee in addition to giving lectures and acting as a mentor for two years, before making the decision to transition to Washington University. In addition to his appointment to the Department of Medicine’s Division of Hospital Medicine, Dr. Ackerman will also work as part of the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Ackerman’s primary interests are in the areas of hospital medicine, medical education, and the advancement of combined Med-Peds, especially its role in inpatient medicine. Outside of medicine, he enjoys playing guitar, hiking, and learning how to support local flora and fauna in the home setting.
