Dr. Natalia Genere joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Lipid Research as an Instructor in August 2020.
Dr. Genere grew up in the Detroit, Michigan area. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Medical Anthropology from the University of Michigan, and subsequently completed medical education at the University of Minnesota. Her medical training then took her to Chicago, where she completed a combined program in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Chicago, followed by subspecialty training in Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism, and Nutrition at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Genere comes to the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Lipid Research with clinical interests in benign and malignant disorders of the thyroid. She looks forward to developing innovative care delivery models to provide comprehensive patient care and experience in thyroidology as well as other areas of endocrinology. Her research interests are in the diagnosis of early thyroid cancer and, in particular, to better understand the concept of “clinically relevant” cancers and guide their management. Dr. Genere has published in the areas of clinical decision-making in thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer epidemiology and mechanisms of discovery, impacts of thyroid-directed therapy on lipid parameters, and Graves’ orbitopathy. She has also published in topics of adrenal insufficiency and diabetes.
Throughout her medical training, Dr. Genere has grown a strong interest in undergraduate and graduate medical education, as well as in community education. She has enjoyed teaching in a variety of settings throughout her training, and her work has additionally included curriculum development for medical school and residency workshops. These interests in curriculum development and education research led her to complete a fellowship in Medical Education, Research, Innovation, Teaching, and Scholarship (MERITS) at the University of Chicago. She has contributed to community health education as a committee member in Endocrine Society’s Hormone Health Network committee, which provides public education about endocrine conditions. Dr. Genere looks forward to working with students and trainees at Washington University in Saint Louis.
