Dr. Melis Gokce Celdir joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology as an Assistant Professor in July 2025. She is a Fellow Physician in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Iowa. She completed her medical training at Koç University School of Medicine in Istanbul, Turkey, followed by Internal Medicine residency at the State University of New York, Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, New York. Her major research interests are clinical epidemiology and particularly causal inference.
Natural experiments in causal framework can provide controlled observational conditions close to experimental evidence offering valuable insights into disease determinants and treatment effects in gastroenterology. Dr. Celdir’s clinical interests are in celiac disease, autoimmune enteropathies, and eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases. As an educator in gastroenterology, She is dedicated to fostering a dynamic learning environment for students and trainees, emphasizing quality improvement and research methodology in medical education.
