Dr. Matthew Samaro joins the Department of Medicine

Matthew Samaro, MD

Dr. Matthew Samaro joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine as an Instructor as of July 2026.

Dr. Samaro grew up in Dublin, CA, nestled in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. He attended the University of California, San Diego, and graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Psychology. During his time at UCSD and following graduation, he was involved in research projects with the Department of Neuroscience studying verbal working memory and he also served as a student volunteer in clinical medicine at the Stanford Cancer Center. His involvement in these activities solidified his desire to pursue a career in medicine.

He received his medical degree in 2023 from Indiana University School of Medicine. While in medical school, he worked with the Department of Infectious Diseases on projects involving diagnostic stewardship, next-generation sequencing, and quality improvement. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and was awarded the Indiana University School of Medicine Primary Care Scholarship.

Dr. Samaro completed his internship and residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/WashU Medicine before joining Hospital Medicine in 2026. Dr. Samaro was invited to present at Internal Medicine Grand Rounds to discuss the role of Palliative Care in severe cases of Alcohol-Associated Hepatitis. His clinical interests include preventive care, acute and chronic liver diseases, and palliative and end-of-life care. He looks forward to continued involvement in medical student and resident education. Outside of medicine, his hobbies include gardening, cooking, and supporting Manchester City Football Club.
