Dr. Maheen Khan joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology as an Assistant Professor as of July 2026.
Dr. Khan is a skilled nephrologist and an outstanding emerging clinician-educator who brings commitment, compassion, and clinical excellence to her patient care and teaching. Dr. Khan earned her medical degree from Dow Medical College, Pakistan. She served as a house officer at Dr. Ruth K Pfau Civil Hospital, the country’s busiest tertiary care public hospital, before completing her internal medicine residency at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, LA, where she graduated as Chief Resident. We were fortunate to recruit her for nephrology fellowship training at Washington University, where she has excelled clinically and emerged as a leader and mentor among her peers.
Dr. Khan is known throughout our division as a thoughtful and skilled clinician with a warm and approachable manner. She receives outstanding evaluations from faculty and trainees, both on consult services and in outpatient clinics. She was selected by our faculty to serve as Chief Fellow during her second year of training, a testament to her professionalism, collegiality, and leadership. She is organized, team oriented, and deeply committed to the care of her patients. Clinically she has an interest in onco nephrology, and we are planning that she hold a clinic in the Gary Werth Building where she will provide consultative services to cancer patients who develop kidney complications. We have been consistently impressed by her empathy, clarity in communication, and ability to navigate complex medical decision-making.
In addition to Dr. Khan’s clinical excellence, she is a gifted educator. She actively teaches residents, medical students, and peers, and she has developed a growing portfolio of educational scholarship, including participation in the Teaching Physician Pathway during her fellowship. She is currently developing an integrated nephrology-palliative care curriculum for our fellowship. She was recently honored as one of six fellows across the Department of Medicine to receive the Knowlton Award for Excellence – which recognizes trainees who exemplify exceptional clinical skill, compassionate patient care, leadership, and professionalism. Established to help train and celebrate the most promising internal medicine physicians in St. Louis, the program honors those who balance outstanding bedside care with a commitment to advancing the science of internal disease diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
