Dr. Lubika Nkashama joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine as an Instructor as of July 2026.
Dr. Nkashama was born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo, an experience that shaped his commitment to service and education. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Geneva College in Pennsylvania, where he developed a strong foundation in biology and an early interest in research.
Following college, Dr. Nkashama worked at the University of Pittsburgh, studying the impact of dietary potassium on blood pressure regulation in the kidney. He later attended medical school at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, where he remained actively engaged in research. During medical school, he spent a dedicated research year at Johns Hopkins University conducting a basic science project in cardiac electrophysiology as a Sarnoff Research Fellow. In 2023, he was awarded the Doctor of Medicine degree with special mention in Biomedical Research.
Dr. Nkashama completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis/Barnes-Jewish Hospital Consortium from 2023 to 2026. He has a special interest in cardiology, with a particular focus on understanding the social and biological determinants of cardiovascular disease and translating this knowledge into effective prevention strategies.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Nkashama enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He is an avid runner and has completed multiple long-distance events including a marathon, several half-marathons, and 10-mile races. He looks forward to caring for patients and contributing to education and research as a member of Hospital Medicine.
