Dr. Kevin Bauerle joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Lipid Research as an Instructor in January, 2021.
Dr. Bauerle was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He earned his bachelor of science in biochemistry from Louisiana State University and his MD/PhD from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he studied the role of NF-kappaB signaling in thyroid cancer development and progression under the guidance of Dr. Bryan Haugen. Dr. Bauerle completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, and his Fellowship in Endocrinology at Washington University in St. Louis. His postdoctoral research under the guidance of Dr. Charles Harris investigated the role of the glucocorticoid receptor in adipocyte development.
Dr. Bauerle’s current research focus is aimed at further understanding the role of nuclear hormone receptors in metabolic disease. As a member of the laboratory of Dr. Carlos Bernal-Mizrachi, he intends to utilize a variety of cell-based and animal models to explore the role of the mineralocorticoid and vitamin D receptors in the development of metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes. A primary focus of these studies will be to delineate novel roles for nuclear hormone receptors within cell types of the immune system, with the intent of developing novel therapeutic approaches for the management of metabolic disease in humans.
Dr. Bauerle’s clinical interests lie in the areas of endocrine neoplasms, metabolic bone disease, and obesity management. He serves as staff physician in the Division of Endocrinology at the VA St Louis Healthcare System, where he is actively involved in the endocrine fellowship training program associated Washington University in St. Louis.
