Dr. Erin Baum Joins the Department of Medicine

Erin Baum, MD

Dr. Erin Baum joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine as an instructor in June 2020. She grew up in Morris, IL before attending Loyola University Chicago where she graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a minor in Mathematics while also completing the Interdisciplinary Honors Program. Her undergraduate years solidified a desire to serve others via time spent with the Alpha Phi Omega co-ed service fraternity and local community service organizations. During this time, she also trained at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) participating in a project investigating associations between bladder cancer and genetic mutations. After college, Dr. Baum was a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest at an AmeriCorps position working with the Providence Hospice Transitions Program in Seattle, Washington. She spent the year serving patients with life-limiting and terminal illnesses, to provide vulnerable patients with emotional and practical support. She took lessons learned about empathy and compassion back to Chicago for medical school at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. While in medical school, she continued to foster her passion for community service, worked on a research project investigating the use of internal jugular IV access, and cultivated a love of teaching by tutoring undergraduate medical students. She obtained her doctorate of medicine in 2017 and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Baum completed her internal medicine internship and residency at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis/Barnes-Jewish Hospital 2017-2020. Her clinical interests include underserved patient populations, preventative care, quality improvement, palliative and end-of-life care, as well as clinical education of medical students and residents. In her spare time, she enjoys trying new foods, playing cards, kayaking, hiking, rooting for the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Blackhawks as well as being a bandwagon St. Louis sports fan.
