Dr. Diana Zhao joins the Department of Medicine

Diana Zhao, MD, PhD

Dr. Diana Zhao joined the Department of Medicine as an Instructor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in June 2020. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences with Honors from The University of Chicago in 2008. She earned her MD and PhD from Washington University School of Medicine in 2017. She received full merit scholarship and research training support through the prestigious NIH-sponsored Medical Scientist Training Program. She completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at Barnes Jewish Hospital and Washington University in 2020.

Her past research has been in the field of cancer biology, including genetic analysis of mast cell malignancies and signaling biology of the tumor suppressor p19Arf. Dr. Zhao did her PhD work in the laboratory of Dennis Hallahan at Washington University School of Medicine. Her thesis project involved targeting Egr1, a novel approach for augmenting the therapeutic index of radiation on cancer cells. Her research work has culminated in peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Journal of Biological Chemistry, Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, and Development. She has presented her work at national and international conferences including American Association for Cancer Research, American Society for Clinical Oncology, and International Congress of Radiation Research. Dr. Zhao has received research training awards through American Association for Cancer Research, Radiation Research Society, and International Congress of Radiation Research. Her current academic interests include hospital medicine, inpatient care, and infectious diseases.

Outside of medicine, her hobbies include vegetable gardening, traveling the world, and kickboxing.
