Dr. Wooten joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases as a professor in September 2024. She holds the positions of ID Fellowship Program Director, Vice Chief of Medical Education, and Director of Educational Programs. She earned a BA in Human Biology from Stanford University and a master’s degree in health and medical sciences from UC Berkeley. Dr. Wooten completed her medical training and Internal Medicine residency at UC San Francisco, followed by an ID Fellowship at Harbor UCLA. Before joining Washington University, Dr. Wooten was a faculty member in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at UC San Diego for a decade. During her tenure at UC San Diego, she served as the Program Director of the ID Fellowship and the Course Director for the Clinical Foundations Course, a clinical skills course for first and second-year medical students. She also founded and directed the Fellow-and-Faculty-as-Clinician-Educator course, aimed at enhancing teaching and medical education skills for subspecialty fellows and early career faculty.
Dr. Wooten’s clinical expertise includes HIV primary care and general infectious disease consultations. She is nationally recognized as an authority in HIV Medicine, frequently delivering lectures, commentaries, and comprehensive analyses of the latest clinical HIV research findings from prominent conferences such as CROI, IDWeek, and IAS. Additionally, Dr. Wooten is a nationally acclaimed leader in medical education. She has spearheaded numerous educational innovations across undergraduate and graduate medical education, published several manuscripts related to infectious disease medical education, and held various leadership positions within the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
