Dr. Ananya Gupta joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine as an Instructor as of July 2026.
Ananya Gupta, PhD, is a microbial immunology enthusiast with over a decade of cutting-edge research experience specializing in pulmonary infections and underlying immune responses. Driven by a mission to map the cellular and molecular landscapes of the respiratory system, her work bridges the gap between fundamental bench science and clinical application.
Dr. Gupta earned her PhD in Immunology from the National Institute of Immunology in New Delhi, India, where she pioneered innovative anti-tuberculosis nasal immunotherapy strategies in preclinical models. She expanded her translational expertise as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Khader Lab, exploring complex host-pathogen interactions and systemic immunity against mycobacterial infections in humans. Her collaborative research has led to significant, high-impact publications detailing immune dysfunctions in rare nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) diseases, vaccine-induced trained immunity against SARS-CoV-2, and cellular regulators of Mycobacterium tuberculosis pathology.
Currently, Dr. Gupta’s research focuses on deciphering the complex lung-bone marrow axis during acute lung injuries, such as pneumonia. By leveraging high-throughput techniques, transgenic mouse models, and human clinical specimens, her work illuminates crucial structural and cellular cues within the pulmonary microenvironment to discover novel therapeutic pathways. Beyond her research, she actively serves the scientific community as an invited reviewer for leading journals like NPJ, Frontiers and Tuberculosis.
