Dr. Akhil Sood joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology as an Assistant Professor in August 2025.
Dr. Sood clinical and research interests focus on systemic lupus erythematosus, with an emphasis on understanding patterns of care and developing strategies to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes.
During his fellowship in Rheumatology and Immunology at Stanford University, Dr. Sood earned a Master’s of Science in Epidemiology & Clinical Research. His thesis studied the barriers and facilitators of adherence to reproductive health guidelines in lupus care, drawing insights from both patient and physician perspectives. This work has informed ongoing quality improvement initiatives aimed at closing gaps in care.
At WashU, Dr. Sood leads a dedicated Lupus clinic at the Center for Advanced Medicine – South County. He actively collaborates across disciplines to advance patient-centered research and care. He is also deeply committed to medical education and serves as a preceptor for rheumatology fellows in continuity clinic.
