As we move into the new academic year, I am excited to share updates on two key initiatives in the Department of Medicine: AWAM (Advancing the Workforce in Medicine) and FWIM (Future Workforce in Medicine). Both programs reflect our commitment to supporting faculty and trainees while fostering collaboration, mentorship, and growth.
Advancing the Workforce in Medicine (AWAM)
AWAM is dedicated to cultivating an inclusive environment and creating opportunities for career development and advancement. This year we are launching the Award Transparency Project, a comprehensive database of specialty-specific awards designed to increase recognition of faculty across the department. The project was piloted in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine by Dr. Nguyet Nguyen, with Drs. Maria Baggstrom and Cajal Sumino leading expansion efforts in the Division of Oncology and beyond.
We are also expanding the Faculty Speakers Network that was created last year. It is a curated list of faculty available for regional and national presentations to raise visibility and streamline speaker selection. More details will be shared soon.
In addition, I encourage you to explore the Mentee Document, created in partnership with the Office of Faculty Development and MEDA (Mentorship to Enhance Development in Academia).which offers valuable guidance on being an effective mentee.
Future Workforce in Medicine (FWIM)
FWIM, established in 2014, continues to provide career development resources and foster community among trainees. This year’s programming will include workshops and events focused on leadership skills and career preparation, with a full schedule to be announced soon.
We are also excited about the FWIM Leadership Development Program (FLDP), an 8-month longitudinal program for residents and fellows. We are thrilled with the tremendous response to this year’s call for applications, and selections will be announced soon.
We will have opportunities open to get involved in both the FWIM and AWAM committees. Please reach out if you’re interested. A formal call for applications for new committee members will be coming this fall.
I look forward to an inspiring year filled with opportunities to support one another, celebrate our collective achievements, and continue building a culture that empowers our faculty and trainees to thrive.
