Dr. Hajar El Amri joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine as an Instructor as of July 2026.
Dr. Hajar practices as a hospitalist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Dr. Hajar was born and raised in Morocco and earned her medical degree in Casablanca. During medical school, she developed an early interest in population health, outcomes of research, and health equity. She completed a medical school thesis focused on maternal mortality at the national obstetric center, an experience that shaped her long-standing interest in healthcare disparities and systems-based approaches to improving patient outcomes.
She completed her Internal Medicine residency training at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, where she gained broad clinical experience across general internal medicine and inpatient subspecialty services. During residency, Dr. Hajar was actively engaged in scholarly and quality improvement initiatives and developed interests in hospital medicine, oncology, hematology, and endocrinology.
Her academic work has focused on improving access to patient-centered cancer care, with particular attention to disparities in breast reconstruction following mastectomy. She has participated in a quality improvement project evaluating access to and utilization of breast reconstruction among patients undergoing mastectomy, examining factors such as age, insurance status, and geographic barriers to care. This work reflects her broader interest in identifying structural and system-level factors that influence equitable access to care.
Dr. Hajar has presented her scholarly work at national and regional academic meetings, including the American College of Physicians Illinois Chapter and ENDO society, where she presented posters on spontaneous coronary artery dissection and nasopharyngeal cancer. She remains committed to continued scholarly engagement and quality improvement efforts aimed at enhancing inpatient care delivery and clinical outcomes.
As a hospitalist at Washington University, Dr. Hajar is dedicated to delivering high-quality inpatient care and contributing to the academic mission of Hospital Medicine through clinical excellence and ongoing quality improvement.
