Dr. Ibrahim El Mikati joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine as an Instructor as of July 2026.
Originally from Beirut, Lebanon, he was raised in a household that valued education and hard work. He earned his Medical Doctor degree from the American University of Beirut (AUB) in 2021 after completing his bachelor’s degree in biology with Distinction and a minor in Arabic and Near Eastern Languages. During his time at AUB, he was recognized for his academic excellence and leadership as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society and furthered his expertise in clinical research by completing the Scholars in Health Research Program (SHARP) Summer Diploma.
Following medical school, Dr. El Mikati served as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Kansas Medical Center’s Outcomes and Implementation Unit in Kansas City, Kansas, under the mentorship of Dr. Reem Mustapha. During this time, he played a pivotal role in authoring clinical practice guidelines, including updated multiple COVID-19 diagnostic guidelines for the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), pediatric peritoneal dialysis guidelines with the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD), in addition to contributions to other societies including the American Society of Hematology (ASH), American Academy of pediatrics (AAP), and the European Porphyria Network (EPNET). He also had significant contributions in the research methodology field including first authoring a conceptual framework for “living” practice guidelines published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, along with advancing the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework for rating imprecision and utilizing unpublished registry data. His work was recognized with the KUMC postdoctoral association career development award and won the Evidence Foundation Scholarship award.
Dr. El Mikati completed his internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. While initially drawn to primary care, Dr. El Mikati found the inpatient environment uniquely rewarding due to the complex pathology and the immediate impact of clinical interventions. This passion led him to explore hospital medicine further as he served as a Board Member of the Society of Hospital Medicine – Maryland Chapter, where he worked to advance regional hospitalist initiatives. During his training, he enrolled in the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement pathway, where he spearheaded an IRB-approved research project focused on enhancing patient-provider communication through the perspectives of medical interpreters and led educational activities including a Morbidity and Mortality case presentation. Recognized by his colleagues for his organizational skills and positive energy, he was awarded the Outstanding Resident of the Month award for November.
As an Instructor within Hospital Medicine, Dr. El Mikati aims to bridge the gap between rigorous clinical research and bedside practice. He plans to focus his academic efforts on clinical excellence and quality improvement, particularly in enhancing communication for patients from diverse backgrounds.
