Residents of the Month

Dr. David Zhang: “He was an outstanding senior on Cardiology Firm. He led the team with confidence, and his depth of knowledge was on par with a Cardiology fellow. He balanced patient care and teaching exceptionally well, and was consistently responsive to questions. He managed complex pathologies and ACTs with ease, and it was a genuine pleasure to learn from him. I hope to have the opportunity to work with him again in the future!”

Dr. Connor McWhinney: “He was an amazing senior. He encouraged independence and efficiency as interns but was very supportive throughout. We learned a lot from him, even how to manage a team as upcoming seniors. Call days were run smoothly with adequate oversight, support, and collaboration. Overall provided a great and rewarding month on firm!”

Dr. Rafaella da Cunha Lyrio: “One of the most intelligent interns I’ve had the pleasure of working with. She had an amazing ability to site literature and new studies that changed the way we provided care to our patient. Her bedside manner and her ability to communicate with patient made patient’s feel that we were providing them the best care possible. Multiple patients stated that she was their favorite doctor. In every patient encounter, she would kneel down to patient level and provided excellent active listening, making sure the patient felt heard and cared for.”

Dr. Michael McNehlan: ”He did an exceptional job during his CAER rotation. His work ethic, clinical curiosity, and commitment to patient care were outstanding. His communication skills were especially impressive. He has a natural ability to connect with patients and put them at ease, making them feel heard, respected, and genuinely cared for. Patients clearly trust him, and it was easy to see why. He took full ownership of his patients, actively sought out feedback, and applied it with impressive speed. He was dependable, thoughtful, and a true team player who was always willing to help wherever needed. His compassion, professionalism, and consistency made a lasting impression on both patients and staff. He truly exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding future primary care doctor. Frankly, if this is what he’s like as an intern, the rest of us should be a little nervous about how good he’s going to be.”

Dr. Nick Boyle: “He is an outstanding intern. His clinical instincts are exceptional. On one occasion, he identified that something was “off” in a patient who had been improving and was nearing discharge. He escalated care based on that gut instinct, and the patient was found to be in non-convulsive status epilepticus with over 20 seizures in under an hour on EEG. He does not just follow the data, he recognizes when the story does not fit. He is also a fierce advocate for his patients. Early on, on his first call day, he quickly noticed a patient he was admitting was in afib with RVR and was inappropriate for the floor. He pushed to ensure the patient received the level of care they needed getting the patient to the ICU. What makes him unique is the genuine compassion that lies underneath a rugged, curmudgeonly exterior. While he may at first come across as sarcastic, I can tell that he cares very deeply about his patients and their families. He routinely checked in on all patients before signing out at the end of the day. If last-minute symptoms popped up he refused to go home until the patient was tucked away. Whether reassuring the parents of a patient with steroid-induced psychosis, guiding a young patient through a devastating new diagnosis of metastatic melanoma, or supporting families through the uncertainty of end-stage liver disease, he communicated with honesty, clarity, and empathy. The fact that multiple patients and families gave him handwritten cards speaks volumes.”

Charlotte Starling showed extraordinary clinical excellence, leadership, and commitment to education. She is an astute diagnostician with a tremendous fund of knowledge that at times exceed even those of consulting teams. She consistently elevated the care of every patient. Her intuition and clinical acumen are remarkable. She teaches constantly—whether guiding learners through complex imaging findings, discussing recent studies, or helping students and interns build durable thinking skills—and she meets every learner exactly where they are. Her bedside manner is exceptional, her communication direct yet deeply compassionate, and her professionalism truly above and beyond. As a dynamic, approachable, and highly effective team leader, she amplifies the strengths and successes of everyone around her.
