The Fellowship in Medical Education for General Internists is a 2-year program for graduates of ACGME accredited medicine residency programs who are committed to teaching, education innovation and to pursuing careers as scholarly clinician educator leaders. Fellows will receive training in large group teaching, small group facilitation, bedside teaching, curriculum development, learning theory, program evaluation, education scholarship and leadership skills. Clinical effort will include attending on both inpatient and ambulatory medicine teaching services. Fellows in this program will be expected to apply for and complete a Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE) online through our collaborating institution, the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC).
Curriculum
- Didactics – Fellows will complete the coursework for the Masters in Health Professions Education Program through the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) over 2 years. This blended curriculum involves synchronous and asynchronous online distance learning.
- Teaching – Mentoring medical students in the Phase 1 Clinical Skills Bedside Teaching Program (summer). Additional teaching opportunities may include: facilitating medical student small groups or teaching didactics as part of Phase 1 or Phase 2 courses/didactics; developing and leading didactics for medicine residents as part of the ambulatory core didactics and noon conference series.
- Clinical – This position is required to attend on the general medicine inpatient teaching service for 16-20 weeks per year. In addition, fellows will spend 1 half day per week as the supervising attending in the general medicine resident continuity clinic. It is essential that the Fellow continue to develop their clinical competency and deliver high quality patient care.
- Leadership – The WUTPP program offers a clinician educator pathway for medicine residents. The Clinical Fellow in Medical Education is an integral part of this pathway by designing curricula and being a mentor to the junior residents as part of his/her role as the Assistant Director for WUTPP for residents.
- Research – Fellows will complete at least one mentored scholarly project in medical education, with the goal of publication and presentation at a national conference.
