Monica Chang-Panesso, MD, assistant professor of medicine, Division of Nephrology, was selected as the recipient of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation (SSCI) 2023 Research Scholar Award for her proposal entitled “Tubular Senescence and Proliferative Capacity of the Aging Kidney”.
The SSCI Research Scholar Award provides support for physician-scientists as they take on innovative research projects related to internal medicine and its subspecialties.
“I am very grateful for the SSCI award,” shares Chang-Panesso. “It will support my studies in acute kidney injury and repair, which has a higher prevalence in the elderly population. I am interested in exploring the mechanisms underlying the decreased repair response in the aging kidney, which raises the risk of progression to chronic kidney disease. Gaining a better understanding of why this happens can point the way towards finding new therapeutic targets.”
Chang-Panesso will accept the award at the Southern Regional Meeting 2023 to be held February 2-4, 2023 in New Orleans, LA.
The SSCI is a regional academic society dedicated to the advancement of medically-related research with a major focus on encouraging students and post-graduate trainees to enter academic medicine and to support junior faculty success in clinical investigation.
