Dr. Wenners Ballard joins the Department of Medicine

Dr. Wenners Ballard joined the Department of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine as an Instructor in July, 2018.

Dr. Wenners Ballard III received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Hampton University in 2010, a Master’s Degree in Tumor Biology from Georgetown University in 2011, and a Medical Degree from Howard University in 2015. His research interest during medical school focused on identifying genes involved in breast cancer and the basic science immunology pertaining to melanoma. Throughout his medical school career he remained heavily involved with several D.C. community outreach programs concerning health disparities and tutoring inner city youth.

He went on to complete Internal Medicine residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine in 2018. During residency he published research involving cytokine release syndrome in patients with hematologic malignancies (Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation journal), diagnosing lymphomas via endoscopic biopsy (Gastrointestinal Endoscopy journal), Inotropic therapy in patients with advanced heart failure (Journal of the American College of Cardiology), and also wrote a review article on the prevention of cardiotoxicity in cancer patients (Cardiovascular Reports Journal). He went on to present this research at various national and local conferences.

Although, Wenners is dedicated to contributing to various research endeavors, he feels most in his element when engaging with patients and families. He enjoys teaching and rounding with medical students as well, and will be participating in a piloted cardiovascular physiology small group for Washington University medical students. During residency Wenners was also Co-President of the Washington University Minority Medical Association, an organization that helps address disparities not only medically, but academically and socioeconomically. Currently, he looks forward to continuing to practice within the Division of Hospital Medicine as well as engaging in local St. Louis Community service activities.
